Meet the NMA team: James Misner
Our interview series continues today with James Misner, NMA regional account manager for the northern United States. Say hi to him this August at the NMA and GoSection8 Housing Conference!
Tell us about your work experience and how you got your start in the affordable housing industry.
Real estate, mortgage, and banking. I got my start in the industry here at NMA, starting March 3, 2014.
Education credentials?
I have an A.A. in humanities and a B.A. in finance.
What’s one topic you’re most passionate about in the affordable housing industry?
Helping housing authorities be able to do "a lot more with a lot less."
What's your favorite part about your job?
Talking with people and figuring out solutions and different ways of doing things.
Describe your typical workday?
Never really a typical one, and that's the best part. I never get bored, because it's never really the same day twice.
Tell us about a successful project that you had a part in.
Well, I can't say it's a success yet, but it's starting to gain speed. I'd have to say my regionalization of training hubs throughout my territory, and conducting regular quarterly trainings. I'm currently working with agencies in North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Utah, and Kansas, and beginning talks with agencies in Nebraska, Montana, and Minnesota.
Are you affiliated with any outside organizations?
Indirectly, I'm affiliated with GLOW (Grand Ladies of the Old West). My wife is a past president of this nonprofit group that raises funds for local battered women's houses.
Hobbies outside of work?
Pool (billiards), poker, golf, tennis, astronomy, and motorcycles — I'm getting mine fixed by August!
